What should I carry the ds in, other than something I need to go purchase? Anything I can find around the home?

Get a plastic case. Most stores selling ds's have these.Case for nintendo ds lite?
you could find some kind of soft cloth and sew it together to make a kind of case for ur ds. plus you could use the case itself to clean the screens once in a while
lol i keep mine in a pencilcase type thing
